Allusion
Darwin and Evolution
In the novel, Zafon alludes to Darwin and the theory of evolution. Darwin is brought up in conversion a couple of times by a professor at a university in the novel. The professor jokes about how there is no such thing as evolution and that Darwin was a "dreamer" because the students he teaches are a bunch of apes. This allusion is probably used to provide the reader with a better understanding of the professor's joke and more importantly what he is saying. Meaning that, the professor obviously believes that the students are becoming less intelligent and the understanding of this is increased by alluding to Darwin.
