Cemetery of Forgotten Books
“This is a place of mystery, Daniel. A sanctuary. Every book, every volume you see here, has a soul...In this place books no longer remembered by anyone, books that are lost in time, live forever, waiting for the day when they will reach a new reader's hands. In the shop we buy and sell them, but in truth books have no owner. Every book you see here has been somebody’s best friend. Now they only have us, Daniel. Do you think you’ll be able to keep such a secret?”(Zafon, 5-6)
In the beginning of the novel, Daniel's father takes him to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and tells him to choose whatever book he wants. The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is a huge library containing thousands of used books that have been "forgotten". This place plays a large role in Daniel's life because he discovers the book The Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carax. Upon reading the book Daniel embarks on a journey to discover the mystery behind the author and the other books written by him. The extensive library is continuously incorporated into the plot with characters other than Daniel, including Beatrice Aguilar, and Nuria Monfort. Beatrice is the only individual, other than his own son that Daniel brings to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Nuria Monfort is the women who first placed a copy of The Shadow of the Wind there, along with one copy of all of Julian Carax's novels.

Aldaya Mansion
"All I could see was a tangle of weeds and the outline of what seemed to be a fountain or a pond from which an outstretched hand emerged, pointing up to the sky...Farther away veiled by the weeds, I caught sight of a marble staircase, broken and covered in rubble and fallen leaves. The glory and the fortune of the Aldayas had faded a long time ago. The place was a graveyard."(Zafon, 143-144)
The Aldaya Mansion is a building that is of importance in both Daniel and Julian Carax's life. It is a pivotal to the story because both Julian and Daniel's relationships with the women they love develop in that mansion. Julian first met Penelope in that mansion and Daniel began his relationship with Beatrice there as well. Also the mansion itself is an eerie setting which helps create a mysterious atmosphere in the novel. Finally, a lot of very important events take place in this building including the main climax of the novel in which Inspector Fumero, Julian Carax and Daniel Sempere come face to face.
